File compressor

Drop a PDF, a video or an audio file and it gets squeezed right here in your browser. Anything else goes into a ZIP. Your files never leave your device.

Drop any file

PDF, MP4, MOV, WebM, MP3, WAV, M4A… or several files to zip together.

Why some files squeeze and others won't

There are two kinds of compression. Lossless compression, the kind inside ZIP, finds repeated patterns and replaces them with short references, so every byte comes back when you unzip. Lossy compression, the kind in JPEG, MP3 and H.264, throws away detail your eyes and ears are unlikely to miss.

Try the three inputs on the right. Text collapses to a fraction of its size. Random bytes don't shrink at all, and that is exactly what an MP4, a JPG or an MP3 looks like to a ZIP tool: its own codec already removed the patterns. That's why SqueezeFiles re-encodes video and audio at a lower bitrate instead of zipping them, and why "zip it to make it smaller" rarely helps with media.

For a deeper look, read how to compress a PDF or how to compress a video.

…

Repeated words become short back-references ("copy 7 bytes from 42 bytes ago"), so predictable text shrinks a lot and nothing is lost: unzip it and every byte comes back.

Limits, stated plainly

  • Memory: the browser keeps the original and the result in memory together. Video engines in WebAssembly have roughly 2 GB to work with, so very long 4K files will fail; trim them first.
  • Speed: in-browser video encoding uses one CPU core. Expect roughly real time or slower on a laptop and slower still on phones. PDFs and ZIPs usually take seconds.
  • Formats: video comes out as H.264 MP4 (the most compatible choice), audio as MP3 or M4A, PDFs stay PDFs. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
  • Results vary: a file that's already efficiently encoded may not get smaller. When that happens we tell you and suggest keeping the original.

Questions people ask

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. PDFs are rewritten with pdf-lib and pdf.js, video and audio are re-encoded with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, and ZIPs are built with fflate, all inside your browser tab. You can disconnect from the internet after the page (and, for video, the engine) has loaded and it still works.

How much smaller will my file get?

It depends entirely on what is inside. Scanned PDFs and phone videos often shrink a lot; text-only PDFs, MP3s and already-compressed MP4s may barely change. We show the real before and after size of your file and never claim a fixed percentage.

Is there a file size limit?

The limit is your device's memory. We cap PDFs at 300 MB, audio at 500 MB, video at 800 MB and ZIPs at 1 GB in total, because a browser tab can only hold so much. On phones, stay well below those.

Can I compress images here?

For JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF, use our sister site compresspixel.io, which is built just for images. SqueezeFiles focuses on PDFs, video, audio and archives.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily quota. Because your own device does the work, there is no server cost per file to pass on.
