ZIP uses DEFLATE, which combines two tricks: repeated sequences are replaced by a pointer to where they appeared before (LZ77), and common symbols get shorter codes than rare ones (Huffman coding). Choose an input below and it is compressed live in your browser.

Repeated words become short back-references ("copy 7 bytes from 42 bytes ago"), so predictable text shrinks a lot and nothing is lost: unzip it and every byte comes back.

How do I zip files online without uploading them?
Drop the files on this page, pick a compression level and press Create ZIP. The archive is built by fflate, a JavaScript DEFLATE library, inside your browser and downloaded straight to your device.
Will zipping make my files smaller?
Text, CSV, spreadsheets saved as CSV, source code, logs, BMP and TIFF images shrink a lot. JPG, PNG, MP4, MP3, PDF and Office files are already compressed internally and barely change, so we store them without recompressing.
Can I add folders?
Drag in the files from inside the folder; browsers don't reliably expose folder structure on drop. Every file goes into the root of the archive, and duplicate names get a number added.
Can the ZIP be opened everywhere?
Yes. It is a standard ZIP with DEFLATE, which Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android open natively.
